Offering training in the traditional Wudang & Daoist practices to the Hampton Roads regions of Norfolk, Virginia Beach, & Chesapeake

Introduction

Spring & Autumn Martial Arts are one of a small handful of schools in the west dedicated to the practice, preservation, and promotion of the Wudang Arts. With our head instructor's lineage directly tied to the Wudang Mountains, it is our hope to make these arts accessible to everyone.

Focusing on traditional skill building with an analytical approach to the martial arts, SAMA hopes to share the lifestyle benefits these practices can have on a one's mind, body, and spirit. With a communicative and personal approach to classes and programming, our head instructor allows martial arts to be an emotionally strengthening experience, as we focus on looking inward while training, and finding the subtleness hidden in all our experiences.

As a Daoist Disciple, our teacher approaches people and the arts as living experiences. Classes are about building longevity and defense, to pursue a happiness in life, while carrying for the body and the mind. Our program is individually driven, with a variety of skills available to fit various tastes in the arts, and needs for health.

FAQs

Q
What is Wudang, and why haven't I heard of it before?
A
Wudang is the name of a mountain range in China famous for their swordstyle of martial arts and is the birthplace of Taijiquan. You often may see Wudang written as "Wu-Tang."

Q
Do I have to do Kung Fu if I only want to study Tai Chi?
A
Students interested in just Taijiquan or longevity practice do not need to study the more aggressive gongfu or kicking. Instead, class time is spent rooting, developing foundation, and Taiji Walks while gongfu students kick.

Q
Why do your youth classes start at age 12, but I see younger kids training?
A
It is a tradition to start children at age 12, but exceptions can be made for enthusiastic, focused, and dedicated students.

Q
Where do I get a uniform?
A
Students earn their uniform by demonstrating competence in Jibenquan or the first section of the Taijiquan 108 Postures form. Uniforms come in blue or white, while black uniforms are reserved for those who join us on the annual Wudang Pilgrimages.

Q
Why can't I wear a topknot or monk socks?
A
Monk socks and topknots are reserved for those inducted into Daoist lineages. Although many people wear them to fit a particular image, we continue the tradition in respects of our temple heritage.

Q
I already attend a local martial arts school; can I still train Wudang style?
A
All students currently enrolled at another school must receive verbal permission from their instructor prior to cross-training. Students must be enrolled for at a minimum of 2 years and demonstrate martial competence prior to enrolling in Gongfu or Taijiquan classes. All students are welcome to study longevity practices with us.
